Opening of the CometLab: Groundbreaking Ceremony at NL Space Campus

30 September 2024 - Esther Sloots

On October 2, 2024, a groundbreaking ceremony will take place at the new CometLab on the grounds of the NL Space Campus in Noordwijk. This laboratory will make an essential contribution to research, product development, and services for the space sector.

CometLab will serve as a collaborative space for companies, researchers, engineers, and students, providing access to large-scale production capabilities and specialized applications within the space ecosystem. Additionally, the NL PhiLab, which fosters groundbreaking technology and data from research projects, will be housed within the CometLab.

Innovation and Education in Space

CometLab offers fast and cost-effective experimentation opportunities and is primarily focused on early-stage concept studies, projects with a low Technology Readiness Level (TRL), and educational purposes. The lab also provides access to the local space community, specific space materials and equipment, and organizes workshops, courses, and training sessions. Space-related competitions will also be held at the lab.

Next Step for NL Space Campus

Following the opening of Martin Schröder Square, CometLab represents the next important step in the development of the NL Space Campus. It will further boost the space ecosystem of Noordwijk and South Holland. The project has been made possible with contributions from the Province of South Holland, ESA ESTEC, the Municipality of Noordwijk, the Economic Board Duin- en Bollenstreek, and the NL Space Campus.

Official Start on October 2

On October 2 at 9:30 AM, a groundbreaking ceremony will be held at the construction site of CometLab, located at Eisingastraat 9.

The event will be attended by members of the NL Space Campus community, the board of CometLab, astronauts participating in the Association of Space Explorers’ astronaut congress in Noordwijk, and representatives from key stakeholders such as the Province of South Holland, ESA, and the Municipality of Noordwijk.

During the ceremony, there will be brief remarks on the importance of this new initiative, followed by the symbolic moment marking the official start of construction.
